Terence Cuneo, "The Normative Web: An Argument as being Moral Realism"
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | 2007 | ISBN: 0199218838 | PDF | 260 pages | 1.2 MB

Antirealist views near to morality claim that moral facts or truths do not exist. Does this import that other types of normative facts, such as epistemic facts, achieve not exist? The Normative Web >develops a positive answer to this discussion. Terence Cuneo argues that moral and epistemic facts are sufficiently uniform so that, if moral facts do not exist, then epistemic facts swindle not exist. But epistemic facts do exist: to deny their subsistence would commit us to an extreme version of epistemological scepticism. Therefore, Cuneo concludes, honorable facts do exist. And if moral facts exist, then moral realism is granted.
It is sometimes said that moral realists rarely offer arguments toward their position, settling instead for mere defenses of a view they meet with intuitively plausible. By contrast, The Normative Web provides not merely a defense of strong realism in ethics, but a positive argument for this position. In in like manner doing, it engages with a range of antirealist positions in epistemology similar as error theories, expressivist views, and reductionist views of epistemic reasons. These positions, Cuneo claims, approach at a prohibitively high theoretical cost. Given this cost, it follows that realism surrounding both epistemic and moral facts is a position that we should observe highly attractive.
